  • Computer Vision Syndrome – An Overview

Einstein had predicted the age we are living in now. A world which is digitised and we live our lives in different screens. Even though, it serves as a great boon, it is not all that healthy. The screens we are glued to all day and everyday hamper our eyes to a great extent. But we all know that already, don’t we?

But are we doing something about it?

We actually aren’t and because of this, a new condition has been coined – Computer Vision Syndrome.

For people who just raised their eyebrows and are surprised, don’t be. Most of us knew that it honestly would not take too long before something like computer vision syndrome came into place. But yes, here we are.

Now Computer Vision Syndrome isn’t a condition in itself but it includes and declassifies into the whole range of eye pain and strain as well. According to recent research, around 50%-90% people have showcased some computer vision syndrome symptoms.

What are Computer Vision Syndrome Symptoms?

Any kind of computer work gets harder with age just like every other kind of work. But the reason computer work gets harder as with age, eyesight begins to fade. By the time we hit the age of 40, the ability to focus on near and far objects start to fade.

With regard to computer vision syndrome symptoms, there is no proof that computers and its usage can lead to any kind of long term damage to the eyes but it can lead to severe strain and pain in the eyes.

Here are some computer vision syndrome symptoms:

  • Blurred Vision
  • Double Vision
  • Dry and Red Eyes
  • Eye Irritation
  • Headaches
  • Neck and Back Pain

Computer Vision Syndrome Treatment:

Since computer vision syndrome is not exactly a disorder, the computer vision syndrome treatment basically involves a few changes in the lifestyle of the person.

Some computer vision syndrome treatments are:

  • Cutting the glare: Changing the lighting reflecting on the computer screen from the surroundings is one of the effective computer vision syndrome treatments. If light from a window is casting a glare on the computer screen, shifting the position of the computer helps reducing the strain on the eyes.
  • Rearranging the Desk: Another computer vision syndrome treatment is to rearrange the desk in such a way so that the position of the monitor is 20 to 28 inches away from the face. This helps in the movement of eyes as well as the movement and exertion of the neck and back as well.
  • Giving the Eyes a Break: Following the 20-20 rule is one of the most effective ways for computer vision syndrome treatments. Working on the computer for 20 minutes and then shifting the eyes away from the computer for 20 seconds is a good way of resting your eyes and giving it breaks.
  • Tweaking the settings: Nowadays all computers and laptops comes with settings which can be used to adjust the brightness and contrast of the display. Adjusting the settings is another computer vision syndrome treatment so as to reduce the exertion on the eyes.

All of us if we take a test for computer vision syndrome, most of us will show some symptoms of this condition. It is necessary to take precaution and also make use of the computer vision syndrome treatments so that our eyes do not have to go through another factor for low visibility apart from age.
